I think there are a number of us that have been around a Very Long Time, but I don't agree about no other products with so many problems. I can think of many products that had terrible problems at release, and where sometimes it took a few years (and several major revisions) to get them fixed.

It seems to me that the key point here is that a mail server is truly critical software, and that because of its central position in the network, its problems ripple out to all users. I remember running into the same problem for early adopters of Windows NT Server versus those who stayed with Netware. So while a problem in, say, Windows XP will only affect a percentage of all users, a problem with the mail servers effects everyone. This results in a lot more pressure on the mail server administrator: you need a product that is rock solid, much more stable than almost any other class of software. Indeed, of all the different kinds of servers that I can think of, I would most want stable performance out of the mail server. And that is why we hear so many angry voices in this forum.

I'm like a lot of other people here: I rush to buy the service agreement specifically so that I could upgrade (and whoever said the SA was for anything besides upgrades is really out in left field), and I have a server waiting, but there is no way I am going to install the current IMail 2006. I just can't risk the kinds of problems that people are reporting here (particularly with regard to IMAP and Webmail, which are our primary access methods).

Am I willing to be patient? I suppose; I renewed my Declude SA last June to get version 3 of Declude JM, and I have yet to download that out of fear of its problems. So I can wait a while. Still, I agree with the guy who said that Ipswitch should extend the SAs.

Actually, if you think about it, that doesn't really cost Ipswitch anything, but those SAs are mostly used for upgrades. So you tech support costs are not going up, you're just providing customers an opportunity to download fixes and upgrades a little longer.

I'll keep my fingers crossed about 2006.2, but I won't touch it until at least a month of good reports in this forum.

To all:

Question 1.
I would have to say the beta was poorly managed then as in the 20 plus years I have been doing computers, (started in the a/f in 74 went into the navy in
78, that's when we learned to manufacture our own parts) I have never seen
so many issues and by comparison with other product and other products
forums this is really bad folks... so lets not look to defend the
indefensible lets look to correct.

Question 2.
The only reason I bought a service agreement was for the upgrade to ver 3!!!

Question 3.
Your response to question number 3. seems to indicate that if the current
version is not working we should go back to an earlier version ??? Your
pontiac doesn't work so lets go back to the ford instead of making Pontiac
make it right? Maybe I need more clarification???

Again, I am here and making these comments not to bash, but to say ok
company you have made good product in the past and if - only if - you can
make this work and work right and make it work in a way I don't have to
spend weeks configuring and I am not running every 5 minutes to correct some
new issue that comes up I am golden with that -will give you my time
graciously - will work to have a stable environment for my clients...
otherwise I got to go...

For what its worth... I received an email off list today from a technician
looking to assist me with my problems with Imail, that didn't go far not
because of more problems but because as off today I had my techs format the
machine and reinstall the o/s in preparation for installing another
product... With the advent of the email I received I am now in a holding
pattern, I am going to wait and see how this latest update goes. I would
like to ask al of those who install it to please please please bash it up
good - look at it hard - I will do the same - I will hound tech support day
and night to resolve all issues, and if it turns out they cant - I will be
looking for a refund...

Fyi this is what was sent to me from Ipswitch and my reply...

Jason,

I have a Compaq dl590 64bit 4 processor Itanium server, raid 5 with 8gb of
ram, Microsoft x64 2003 o/s, actually I have several but for purposes of
this discussion this is the base unit.

Where I am at today with your software is I just asked our techs this
morning to format this server, completely removing your software... The
thought being that I cannot take a chance with any ones product unless I can
be assured that the product will install and function correctly. (we
installed it once and couldn't even et certain tabs to show to allow us to
add domains.)

Having said this as an introduction to our going forward let me ask you the
question of the hour???

If we reinstall this product will every feature and function be working at
the end of the install - and yes - with tweaking of course - I am not
unreasonable I recognize things do not always go in perfectly??? But if a
product works then it should ultimately work.

If your answer is unequivocally "YES" then the next question I have is will
your next patch, I understand due out in the near future, require more
tweaking?

If you cannot deliver me a completely working 100% functional product that
will not require continual maintenance and tweaking to keep it operating
correctly I have to ask when can you do so and at that time we will consider
it.

Thanks,

Richard Bowman

Hi Richard,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are having with the new release. I
would like for one of our technicians to help work through these with you
and record any defects that you may be experiencing.
Could you provide me with a phone number so that I may have a technician
follow-up with you on these issues? Also let me know the best time for us
to contact you.

If you could, please reply back to this message with your serial or service agreement number for tracking purposes, along with any particular issues you
may be seeing.

1. Ipswitch released a product that was not even close to be ready. I
posted my theory on why before.

While many believe this, it is not true. There were many companies
participating in the beta, and even though I did not run the beta (only
because of time) I was monitoring what was being said in the web forum and
issues that were found were being addressed and resolved to the satisfaction
of those participating.

2. I renewed my service agreement with Ipswitch because the early
release, had already planned to go with Smartermail.

The SA is not just purely for an upgrade. You did not buy an upgrade SKU,
you bought a service agreement.

3. I have now paid for several months of service agreement for a product
that I can not use and I do not see any offer from Ipswitch correcting
this.

Ipswitch is working on the problems. Imail is still working and upgrades and
updates are happening, although not without pains. Are you saying you can
not get Imail (any version) to work at all?
