no it would not need an MX In fact it shouldn't have one just an "A" record if it is going to be publicly accessible (not the best idea)

If I have a domain, example.com, with an MX record that points to mail.example.com, is there a reason that mail.example.com would *also* need an MX record? Would it need on if mail.example.com has an IP address with a valid PTR? Does this make sense?
