I just used CNAME for the first time ever.   Here was my rationale:

I have the new IMail webmail interface at http://mail.robintek.com
I setup a DNS for a new customer and wanted them  to have easy access to webmail without having to go to my url so I added the following to their DNS file:

webmail IN CNAME mail.robintek.com.

I'm thinking this will get them to the webmail interface using http://webmail.domainname.com

I don't know yet if this will work but thought I'd give it a shot.  It wouldn't be the first time I broke dns  :)

we've debated in-house whether it should be an host or a cname but never found any concrete difference is why I asked.

avoid CNAME unless you know you have solid justification.
