we've debated in-house whether it should be an host or a cname but never found any concrete difference is why I asked.

If I have a domain, example.com, with an MX record that points to mail.example.com, is there a reason that mail.example.com would *also* need an MX record?  Would it need on if mail.example.com has an IP address with a valid PTR?  Does this make sense?
