I've seen odd errors with Outlook when there are mutiple instances running. One is a timeout error, error code 0x8004210B. Another is 'the operation failed'.

Closing then starting Outlook usually helps. Other times, I've had to kill the invisible instances. I'm pretty sure it's only with Outlook XP.

I have one user who consistently (at least twice a week) gets duplicated messages when she first opens Outlook. I have attributed that to Outlook automatically send/receive-ing and her clicking the button. For the remainder of the day, she does not get duplicated messages.

I get a doubled-message call usually once a week from a user.

Every time, I've seen no evidence in IMail of duplicated messages, in the mailbox (main.mbx) or in the logs (POP3D).

hello doug,

i checked in with TS and it appears that we are not seeing/hearing much
chatter on this one. are the duped messages being duped once or twice or
more?

can other folks share any insights as to whether you are seeing
this on pop
accounts? if we can access a few accounts to reproduce, then we have a
better shot at resolving.

bye for now,

kg

Hi Kevin,

Any word on the folks in "TS" on POP3 duplicate downloading? Just got
off the phone with another user who had to clean up 220 newly
re-downloaded messages.

Thanks,

Doug

hello douglas, brian and all,

so your end users are seeing lots of dupes when popping -
looks like several others are too. i'll check around and see
what we are hearing in TS.

"Yet they still have hiccups wherein they end up downloading
duplicates of all the mail in their inbox again. They use
Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and whatever Mac ships on
OS-X these days respectively. It usually happens a couple of
times a week, seemingly at random.

This happened less frequently under 8.21 and seems to happen
more frequently under 8.22."

bye for now,

kg

Brian, did you ever get an acceptable answer for this? I
also was sent the knowledgebase article on what might cause
the multiple download problem and we are in compliance.

We're running Imail 8.22 and I have a VERY light load on our
mail server. It only serves about 20 users, with the
majority of the load being serving some 25 list serves. We
only process about 1000 or so messages a day across all the domains.

Anyway, the users have checked their POP3 email polling
frequency and we've determined that nobody checks their
mailbox more than every 20 minutes. Yet they still have
hiccups wherein they end up downloading duplicates of all the
mail in their inbox again. They use Outlook, Outlook
Express, Eudora and whatever Mac ships on OS-X these days
respectively. It usually happens a couple of times a week,
seemingly at random.

This happened less frequently under 8.21 and seems to happen
more frequently under 8.22.

If I thought Imail 2006 would fix the problem, I would
probably upgrade as it's covered under our SA. But with the
issues presented on this list about it, I'm holding off.

Anybody at IPSwitch listening????

Doug

Thanks for the feedback. Cannot say exactly which version
it started
on, but was never a problem till this last year. My admin program
about box says I'm on 8.21.

In my situation, it is not the issue of setting Outlook's automatic
checking for email too often.

I will try restarting Webmail next time it happens.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I've been hoping to do the
upgrade to 2006 with the idea that it might take care of
it, but I'm
scared to with all the discussion here. Think I'll wait for a few
more patch versions!

Hi,

This has been discussed before. You might want to search
the archives. I
personally have seen this issue on Versions 8.15 and older
versions under
two conditions:

1. The user has their Outlook/Outlook Express set to check
email every
minute or every three minutes. Then they get a large
download with a lot
of
files, the total of which requires longer to download than
the check email
cycle. Before they can finish downloading, OE checks for
new email. Since
the first cycle has not completed, the emails that have
been downloaded
have
not been marked as read, which only happens when all emails
have been
read.
After the second cycle has started, the whole thing
snowballs even deeper.
In this case, have the user set their check for new mail
cycle time to a
reasonable value. Note that I have seen this issue with
users on a 256KB
T1
with large downloads and a check cycle of one minute.

2. The WebMail service is hosed. Stop and restart the
WebMail service. If
the problem is not item 1 above, then stopping and starting
the WebMail
service usually fixes the problem. Don't ask me what the
WebMail service
has
to do with POP3. I do not know, but it works. To understand
that, you
would
have to ask Ipswitch.

Note that I am currently running 8.22 and that I have not
seen this issue
since upgrading to 8.22. That doesn't mean that I won't see
it in the
future. On the otherhand, I did not see it all that
often on 8.15.
Mike

This problem started for us with v8.2. So far it has only been a
problem with the clients that use Eudora. It got a little better
with Eudora by changing the number of threads but still
comes around
from
time to time.
We haven't seen it with any of our Outlook or Outlook Express.

I can't say that it was caused by huge emails or
disconnects since
one of the people that has the issue is me using Eudora
at my home.
I attach large files regularly and only had the disconnect on the
upload not the download side. I've tried many different
things and
the only one that seems to help is keeping the inbox empty.

I tend to believe the problem is in Imail's pop, not the clients.

So you believe it was a specific mal-formed email? I spoke with
tech support, and after analyzing the pop3 log they said
it looked
like the connection was getting terminated via the
firewall or other
non-imail mechanism. I know its not hardware, cables,
etc. I have
seen the problem stop at all sorts of different emails,
not always a
specific one.

We have seen the same thing across our network.
Most of the time we have been able to log in by webmail,
delete the
offending message, and rock on with Outlook. (Yes, it usually is
some stupid joke email.) Once when that didn't work, we had to
delete
the inbox.

this is actually on the internal network so there's no
performance
delay at all. Often its when there are large quantities
of emails
to download, and it hangs up part way through it. Then when you
retry, it does it again and never
deletes the messages.

Yep, I have seen this multiple times on a dial-up
connection. Too
many people sending huge joke
emails anymore.

sounds like they're on dialup and got a large message that isn't
downloading fast enough?

Brian Hruska wrote:
Been on iMail for many years, and lately I've got a

who's messages download over and over. It seems to be a problem

redoing the

several email clients, I believe its something server related.

Are there settings I should adjust to help solve this?

Thanks,
