The moral of the story is, "go with freebsd and a qmail mail toaster, and be
done with this kind of crap forever".
http://www.freebsdwiki.net/index.php/Mail_toaster
We just installed one of these bad boys, and let me tell you - you'll never
look back. I even have a reasonably priced, patient consultant when I need
him... His name is Jim Salter, and if there's something you can't get to
work right in this config, he's very easy to work with. You can contact me
off list if you want to really understand why this BSD config really is the
answer. After seeing what this mail server can do, thinking of using ANY
windows based mail system is truly a step backwards.
I can hear you now... Look, there is a learning curve, but honestly... it's
not so bad. Unless you are married to windows for some other reason, give
this (or even some of the other mail toasters out there) a shot.
The one we just installed doesn't even break a sweat, on HALF the hardware,
compared to the windows/imail/mxguard/clamav/messagesniffer install we had.
Less expensive hardware, MAJOR better performance, no monthly datacenter
windows license going to mr. gates, no per-mailbox licensing, lower costs
overall, MAJOR better security, plain f'ing fast webmail... Etc. etc. It
just sits there and works... And honestly, it's bored.
iMail served us well, but it could not grow with us... And ipswitch
permanently damaged our relationship with them when they announced their
(reversed) decision to not sell iMail independently. We realized how much
at their mercy we were. No more.
It's not appropriate I suppose to propose alternative mail server options
like this on this list, but history shows it's been going on for a while, so
I don't feel quite so bad I guess. This is all along the lines of the
ongoing conversation "what are others using/switching to?" and this has been
our godsend... A mail server that just works.
