Title: Using MSDE w/ Imail

Yeah, but that requires a programmer and we all know what that means…

You can also do email notifications in SQL 2000 without exchange.  However, you do need an ActiveX SMTP control, or CDO on the SQL Server to do it.  SQL 2000 has the ability to call ActiveX objects.

So far, the biggest thing I am liking about the new SQL Server Mgmt Studio is the ability to set up e-mail notifications without an Exchange server. I am still getting used to the changes in viewing logs though, it is a bit cumbersome.

Yep.  The new tool, SQL Server Mgmt Studio, combines the Ent. Mgr. and Query Analyzer in one.  It also can connect to and manage SQL 2000 servers.

With the express version you have to download SQL Server Express Manager (XM) separately.  You can download everything here:

Kevin-

Are there an enterprise manager and query tool for SQL2005 similar to what was available in SQL2000? I installed 2005 express on my workstation and I'm having trouble coming to grips with the lack of a user/manager interface. Maybe I missed something on the installation, but I took all the defaults.

2005 Express does not have a connection limit. It does have processor, database, and memory usage size limits.

Look here for a comparison of features/limits with the different version od SQL 2005

Subject: [IMail Forum] Using MSDE w/ Imail

Hello All,

We’re running Imail 7.15 here and need to build a new SQL Server to handle user authentication. Currently we’re running SQL 2000 Server but the boss wants me to move to SQL Express 2005. I’m concerned that I’ll hit walls with concurrent connection limits. The old 2000 MSDE had a limit of 25 concurrent connections. I’m not positive if this is still true with SQL Express 2005 but being that I have a good 60+ virtual hosts on this server, not to mention about 10 websites that also use this SQL Server, I’m going to run into connection limits hard.

Can anyone provide some insight here? Is it feasible to run Imail with a SQL Express database?
