Hi, John.

We use a Honda Model EU3000is generator for power back up.

Do not use the common generators found in hardware stores such as Home Depot,
etc. These generators are mainly for construction sites where the tools are
insensitive to voltage and frequency fluctuations.

Computer equipment (especially those containing switching power supplies) are
susceptible to voltage and frequency fluctuations. As the motor on the
contstruction-type generators speeds up and slows down, you can get an extreme
range of voltage and frequency which can actually damage your computer
equipment.

The Honda EU3000is generator motor produces 12 VDC which is then feed into a
built-in DC-to-AC electronic inverter that outputs a constant 120 VAC sine wave
at 60 Hz even when the generator motor speeds up and slows down. This generator
also has a 12 VDC tap that you can use to charge back-up batteries in the event
of a power loss.

The EU3000is is gasoline powered with a 5 gallon tank which yields about 20
hours of non-stop service. It is top loaded, so you can add gasoline while the
unit is running. We introduce a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline to prevent the
gasoline from separating into its component parts when stored.

The generator has a key electric start, but also has a pull in case the
electric start fails. When the generator runs, it automatically recharges the
electric start 12 VDC battery. You can optionally get a service switch-over box
for it.

The generator also has automatic speed control which slows the motor down when
the electric load is light, and speeds the motor up when the load is heavy.

The EU3000is produces about 3.3 KVA (watts) which will also give you some
headroom for other things...like lights.

We've had our Honda EU3000is for about 5 years now, and it has never failed us
during a power outage, even extended power outages.

I hope this helps! Good luck with your search.
