SQL is what you have to have to support a lot of concurrent users, since Access is really just a desktop, single user thingy. I recommend books: Inside SQL Server, and SQL Server DBA Survival guide, the latter being chock full of practical info while the former is more designer/theory oriented.
And once you get SQL tamed, you'll start to find all kinds of stuff you can dump into it like your ISP accounting, Radius database, etc, etc.
