I prefer to develop with Sql7 because for me it is just much faster but part
of the reason for that is that I use Visual Studio Enterprise and it's
database designer tools. Moreover the Sql7 database server itself is much
more capable and reliable than is either Sql6.5 or Access. On the other
hand it is a lot more expensive and it definitely takes more knowledge and
skill to manage than either Sql6.5 or Access.
Performance issues -
As with any database you can get excellent results with Sql7 but you
probably will employ different techniques than you would with either Sql6.5
or Access. When compared against Access it is my opinion that Sql7 is much
better when concurrent connections exceed 15 or so and/or you are delaing
with large tables, or complex queries with many columns.
However, I recently completed a project using the new Access2000 and it is
much improved and much faster than the old Access97 but I don't know how it
handles many connections.
Management issues -
Sql7 is much improved over Sql6.5 but again you have to exercize
considerable discipline to study and find how to best use these features.
It is complex enough that it definitely requires some effort and a little
training wouldn't hurt either if you can find the time.
I selected for Sql7 for our IMAIL database because it enables me so many
other possiblilites and it is so much faster for me to write programs.
