Cisco Pix firewalls have a feature that modifies the SMTP statements from
your mailserver in response to an incoming SMTP. It basiclly intended to
block everything that would identify your server or mail software I believe.
It is called SMTP fixup.

"Pix fixup interferes with SMTP by intercepting command verbs and
selectively replacing them with garbage. Thus HELO works, where EHLO is
translated by the firewall to XXXX and usually elicits "500 Syntax error".
In turn this means that only very simple SMTP as defined in RFC821 can ever
work. Extensions cannot."
