I'm sure things have changed a little since we first got our Netscreen 10, but...
Got a Netscreen 10 in 2002 for all our web/mail servers. Easy to setup. We had roughly 500-600kbps of traffic. I remember having to reboot the Netscreen about once every 2 weeks. The web interface would die on us. Firewall kept working though. Also, if we set the logging level too high, everything slowed down until we needed another reboot. In 2004, we got a SonicWall 3060 for web/mail. We have roughly 25 Mbps of traffic going through that firewall. I also installed a 3060 for a 20 employee patent law firm (they have a dedicated 100 Mbps line - not sure of their traffic), a 2040 for another small hosting company, and maybe 10-15 TZ 170s for various small offices. >From 2004 to present, I've NEVER had to reboot our SonicWall 3060 once it was setup. The same goes for the law firm's 3060. I'm not sure if the 2040 ever needed a reboot. Very happy with the SonicWall products. However, the SonicWalls are much more difficult to setup properly. We also had a weird provider issue where the gateway was on a different subnet than our main block of Ips which contributed to a more complicated setup. As you said, technology changes. The price points are also different. I think the Netscreen 10 is sized for 10Mbps of traffic. Where the SonicWall 3060 is sized for 300Mbps of traffic... or something like that. Very different pieces of equipment at the time of purchase and currently. I can't definitively say that one is better than the other at this point. However, we've been much happier with our SonicWall vs. Netscreen experience. [OT] On a side note, I've got a brand new Cymphonix NC1500 still in the box I'm trying to get rid of. Probably good for a medium-sized school. Any takers? ================= Norman Nolasco Advarion Incorporated http://www.advarion.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] 713.859.8886 -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chuck Schick Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 11:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [IMail Forum] Firewall solutions... What are people using today to firewall their mail servers? Hardware? Software? We are looking at changing so I was wondering what everyone else is doing. I searched the archives but it seemed like most of the discussion was in '03 and I am sure that technology is changing. TIA Chuck Schick Warp 8, Inc.
