Whatever the firewall, having a dump of the configuration offline should be step one! a) You can search it for research purposes offline. b) You can do global edits for new IP's, and then use that to reconfigure a new (or same) box. c) IE7 Will allow you to you bum certs, you just have to select a "Not Recommended" choice. d) I run custom iptables in Linux on an old PIII 400, so I can't comment on these brick soulutions. I understand how you'd have problems. As I mentioned in my earlier post, the SonicWall is much more difficult to setup than the Netscreen. Without physical access to the firewall, it gets even more difficult. One crazy problem we had during setup was that the RJ45 cable had a broken clasp. It kept slipping out without us knowing. We kept losing connectivity and had no idea why. Once we had it setup, however, not a single problem for 3-4 years. I would suggest that if you go with a SonicWall... purchase the support package. You can give SonicWall a temporary username and password. They will go through and help you set it up. I just looked at the web admin for our SonicWall and... 1) IE7 won't let me in because it needs a signed certificate to go through https. Firefox was needed for me to go in with a self-signed certificate. 2) Just looking at the admin screens, I wouldn't know how to do something simple like changing the WAN IP address at first glance. I'd probably have to contact SonicWall to make sure I don't screw up my config. I'm looking at our Netscreen now and it's a pretty simple change. However, it may be sized for 10mbps, but I wouldn't try to put more than 400kbps on it. Disclaimer: I'm not a network engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bill Puetz Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 1:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Firewall solutions... >Heads and shoulders above Sonicwall Sorry, I should have clarified that this is just my opinion. The last SonicWall I used caused major problems when I had to change the address. Since I have my equipment co-located in a different country, it was a very large headache. We lost the entire configuration for what should have been a simple change. I'm sure SonicWall has fixed that since, but the experience was enough for me.
