Hi,

Yup, that's the way we do it overhere. At the main site where I host the
mailserver, all the webservers, etc. I have a HP server running CentOS (Redhat
Enterprise Linux without the logo's), the backup is a cheap clone PC with the
same config.

On error: Switch kabels, push power on button. ;-)

Normally the backup machine is connected to my inner network, that way I can
have it download patches etc to keep it up2date. I even have two different
configs on the machine so it can be backup for two different firewall machines.

Met vriendelijke groet,

And, they are cheap enough, you can have a standby machine ready to go on a
minute's notice. No service contract is ever that fast.

      Linux + http://www.shorewall.net/

Easy and flexible! Great results so far.

There must be many 1000s of free firewalls running on FreeBSD and Linux,
with plenty of complete pkgs, how-to's, boot from cdrom/flash, no disk, etc,
with all the major features of proprietary firewalls, and with many of the
minor features. No annual hardware/software contracts in perpetuity, just
another PC.
