A very similar situation was started by a really common NT mail utility
called mailto.exe that let people submit a form to the exe. If the form had
a field called "email" then mailto.exe would put that address in the sender
header and then send it on to whatever mail server was being used - which
could also be specified in the form.
But so many server farms with open relays started becoming blacklisted
because of spam abuse that many, many have now stopped relaying for anything
other than local users. So now there are lots of these mailto.exe forms out
there that just don't work.
Those that have them like them because when they do a reply to from their
clients they can send an email to the person who contacted them. But as I
said earlier the simple solution to that is to add a replyto header in your
program and use a local user.
Or at least I've had this now on at least a couple dozen clients.
