Frank,
15-30 open SMTP processes is not very 'normal'. 30 is the max (unless
registry has been modified - I would not recommend increasing unless you
have the resources to allow more processes). Some message is possibly not
finishing and closing the SMTP32 process, so they stay open for extended
(maybe infinite) time. Maybe even a 'loop' of some kind, sending the mail
back to IMail. Use the Kill.exe as I said before, to stop all SMTP32
processes. Now go to the Queue and select one message (preferable to and
from local users) and click the Send One button. IMail should start a SMTP32
process and deliver the mail, then close that SMTP32 process. You should get
a 'message delivered' message, too. If you get a 'Requeued' message, then
IMail could not deliver (on this try), and you should check the logs to find
out why, but SMTP32 process should have closed. Do this for each mesage in
the Queue until you locate the one(s) that seem to be the source of the
problem. You can more the Q* and D* files to another directory (after the
Kill), then move back Q and D pairs (they share the same file name, except
for the first character) one at a time, so the automatic Queue Timer, does
not cause IMail to start processing the other Q/D files. If the Send One
works (you get the delivered message, SMTP32 for that delivery closes and
Q/D files are removed from the Queue) then move another pair back to the
\imail\spool dir and continue until all have been tried.
I assume you are not getting a Dr. Watson error (you would have said so!),
so your List Aliases are probably OK, but always best to check each one!
Also, look for an Alias that includes another Alias, and check both (or all)
aliases to be sure the total number of addresses does not exceed the 50
value. This can give the same symptoms.
Basically, you need to find the message(s) in the Queue, that are leaving
the open SMTP32 processes. Once you do that, then we have a better chance of
finding the source of your trouble.
I would suggest that you do upgrade, only because the 4.02 is not a real
good version and it could be contributing to your difficulties.
As for the KB article and the process of moving, it is ALWAYS best to do
this with the SAME version of IMail on both computers and we figured that
would be the case. If the article does not say that (I think it does, but
have not checked - just did and it does not!) we will fix it. Sounds like
you installed a newer version on the new computer, then with the file copy,
brought over older versions of the program files. Not a real problem
(assuming it was at least the same major version, ie, 4.0x), just re-install
the new version.
