Hi All

Well I had the day off and the weather is nice so I decided to see
what response I would get about requesting that students ZIP and visual
basic files they send. Responses were interesting and I'm not holding my
breath. Here's what I got.

1. That's an NT problem (Tech College MIS staff are all graduates of the
programing curiculm, RPG, C++, etc). Following an explanation of the
situation they said they were getting Send Mail and that should solve the
problem. After further discussion they finally understood mail servers were
not the issue. But then they pulled out a school requirement that stated
any policy decision had to be approved by the marketing director. Remember
I mentioned someone who thought that if all internet related items were AOL
(AOHELL) compliant that hey were good to go? Guess who that person was, the
marketing director. And I'm taking classes at this school.

All in all I would say that the guys at Tech are well know for their
hatred of the dreaded and litttle known enemy, Microsoft. As far as I know
they only have four people who can set-up and run NT servers (2 in MIS (one
retires this year) & 2 in MIT (the bastard stepchild of MIS))

2. State college was better but any change would require a full review by
the Academic Review Board and would probably take 6 months. They do run
McAffee on all incoming mail and ad looking to run bi-directional virus
scanning in the fall. The network admin was a working MCSE and CCNA so I
think I will be staying in contact with him. Hell he's the only one who
shook my hand and thanked me for stopping by.

By far State was the most intelligent of the three and seemed to
really care about teh systems and the users they were responsible for.

3. Private college did not feel they needed to change anything. They run
an completely Unix based system and student PCs & Email was the only thing
at risk. They also did not feel they should place this extra burden on
their students since they were not sure all of them could work WINZIP and
they didn't want to add to the classes already required (?). Strange I read
in the news paper that they all seemed to figure out how to use Napster
pretty quickly and without a formal course of instruction.

I have also spoken to a couple of the Army and Air Force admins. They
say the military caught hell fron the Love Bug. Supposedly DoD is now
studying their electronic security requirements and looking for a standard
solution. For all of you slick programsers and salesmen, here's a golden
opportunity. Remember, I do get 10% of the commission for the referal. LOL

Kevin C.

If I ever become this uninformed and indifferent, I hope it will be
after my funeral.
