What I have seen agrees with what Daniel says, we set the domain maxsize to
unlimited and then have individual quotas on the users. What basically
happens is that the message gets transferred completely because the size is
unlimited and then IMail sends the "message too large" message back out
instead (unfortunately putting the error message straight on the queue
rather than just sending it, any progress on that bug Daniel??). So it is
working just like normal SMTP, but hey it works.
Before now I was not completely sure of the reason it was working like this
so top marks for working it out.
