Ah but as we both know the external mail gateway (nice reliable unix
servers) are the best place to stop the big messages. We have limits on the
external gateways and so the extra expense of a message getting through is
not much hassle.

ah, that's what I was looking at in the sequence the SMTP handshake. Imail
SMTPD doesn't log the full dialog as the Imail SMTP client does, ie, I
can't see any SMTP line where Imail is emitting 250-SIZE messages.
So looking at Imail SMTPD dialogs, I was trying to see how Imail or other
SMTP server would announce a 250-SIZE parameter before knowing the "RCTP
TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED]", since the per-domain and per-user limits would
not be known at the point where SMTPD was emitting 250-SIZE.

a msg? why wouldn't that msg-too-big-for-our-SIZE situation be handled in
realtime in the SMTP protocol with an RFC821 response code?? ie, reject the
msg as too big before it was sent.
Seems stupid to accept a 30-megabyte msg and then go see if that's too big
for the recipient domain or mailbox.
