Don,

Well, it is a bit hard to say which end is the cause of the problem. First,
the receiving server is ESMTP, so it should recognize the EHLO command and
respond, but the 502 response indicates 'Command not implemented', which
IMail would normally get from an non-ESMTP server, so it issues the HELO
(SMTP) command. Now the remote thinks it got both EHLO and HELO and fails
(but why did it sent the 502, if it recognized the EHLO??).

To me these symptoms, could indicate some transient problem in the data
stream, corrupting the data IMail is sending or remote is receiving. My
guess is it is not either email system, but some problem with the
connection/packet structure or something similiar. My experience tells me it
is probably related to MTU somewhere on your portion of the network. So I'd
tell you to make sure MTU is set for 576 on your router and any other
devices that connect you to the 'net.

The only other way to find out more is to sniff the packets between you and
the remote server and see what that can tell you.

I'm also having some trouble getting DNS data for 'theplanet.com' (could be
me, but other domains I try, get good data), but using the IP from the log,
I can connect to the mail server. It is possible the problem is at the
remote end, but if you see problems sending email to other domains, with
similiar symptoms, I'd say the problem is at your end.
