This is a serious problem for the people who are affected by it. However, you also
need to realize that this list tends to get reports of failures much more often than
successes (the system here, for example, runs quite well, but I don't usually have a
need to mention it).

IMail is a very stable product, except for a few "gotchas" that come up for some
people, but not others (such as the SMTP AUTH problem).

Another mail server I've worked with (costing more than IMail) couldn't even send mail
to the Internet in its default configuration. Certain types of incoming messages
would causes an infinite loop, eating up disk space and CPU cycles with a constantly
growing E-mail, until the system would finally crash. Their tech support took 3 weeks
to respond to say that they don't support the product. It sent out over 100 megs of
duplicate E-mails (the logs confirm that it was an error with the mail server). I
keep encountering problems with it. But, other people have reported that they run
that software without any issues.

So, the key word of the day is YMMV (Your Milage May Vary).
