I've had similar problems.  I've discovered that special characters in the 
listserv lists (such as O'Neal... apostrophes not allowed) can cause 
this.  I'm not sure it's the only thing that causes it though.  I'm still 
watching my spool folder closely and checking all the lists on our system.
