There are a couple of possibilities in addition to the obvious above:
1. Email address harvesting. Might be hard to spot by hand if there's
lots of other traffic.
2. The ever-so popular W32 "Snow White" virus. It's seems to have hit
our customers even more than the I L U V U virus. One variant
continuously connects to the SMTP server and tries to send to e-mail
addresses consisting of random non-printable characters. If those
characters contain @ and ., IMail accepts the message and repeatedly tries
to send it to the garbage address. This can result in many in the queue
and lots of sys****.txt entries.
P.S. The clearwater Fla. A.K.A "kill 63.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 ;-)" spammer
address harvester found me today. I have some interesting games to play
with him over vacation while UUNet takes its time in terminating the
account(s). --
