Charles,
NT 'should' add the IP and hostname (FQDN) used by the first NIC, when
setup, to the HOSTS file (so DNS is not needed to resolve the local
hostname!). But it often, does not.
I would recommend that you add at least one more line like:
1.2.3.4 machine.domain.name
that reflects the full name of the host and its IP.
I have seen cases where this entry is not there (or wrong, especially if IP
or hostname changed) and that can give some rather strange symptoms, when
resolving names.
If, on the Primary IP, IMail (Officail Host Name) is configured to use only
'domain.name', then another line should be added and look like:
1.2.3.4 domain.name
where domain.name is that used by IMail and the IP of the Primary.
Alternately a single line can be used. Format is:
1.2.3.4 machine.domain.name domain.name
And lastly, make sure there is a <CRLF> at the end of the last line of data
(cursor can move to the next line) or the file cannot be parsed correctly
(last line will not be read!).
