If the fw portmaps an external ip:25 to an internal ip:25 then it 
should pass all the traffic on port 25.  Do you have rather an 
application proxy?

??  Not sure what you mean?  SMTP AUTH, strictly speakding, has 
nothing to do with ip addresses, it's a dialog between an SMTP client 
and an SMTPD server.

Imail's SMTPD server will relay mail for any SMTP client in "relay 
for addresses" whether or not SMTP AUTH is used.

Imail's SMTPD server will refuse to relay mail for any SMTP client 
outside of  "relay for addresses" if  SMTP AUTH is not successful.
