SQL server is designed for much bigger databases than the average Imail user
database. Either of them is equally capable at this level. The licensing
model of 2000 may make it more attractive (haven't looked into this in depth
however it looks more appropriate for ISP's). Also both products share the
same database engine with some differences in overlaying featureset
therefore I would not expect great differences in underlying speed. 

You could use an eval version and try both of them, I and others would be
interested in any results you have on the differences.
