Try stopping then restarting the SMTP service.
I don't know of a fix for this in the version 5 of IMail, but the latest V6
has a fix that has helped a lot of people who have seen similar things
(works OK for a good while, then SMTP Auth stops working). Some people have
created a scheduled task to stop/start the SMTP service on a regular basis,
to 'workaround' this.
You can purchase a Service Agreement, to get a year of phone support and it
will include update to the current version and any other updates in the next
year (including new version). See Ipswitch web site for costs and details.
There are significant changes in the Web Messaging in V6 that you should
consider prior to installing V6. If you don't use it or have not modified
the templates in V5, then the consequences are pretty small. However, if you
do use it and have made extensive modifications, there will be some work to
do before you roll it out.
There are some other templates available (HumanKind, is one) that can be
purchased inexpensively and make it even easier to customize Web Messaging.
