We've got our entire system on RAID 5 and it works beautifully. We have 5
10k RPM drives on a Dell (I think Adaptec Makes it) dual channel card with
128MB of cache. One of the drives is designated as a Hot Spare so if any
one fails the card automatically activates the hot spare and rebuilds the
data from the failed drive. This is great since our server is in a co-lo
100 miles away.
In RAID 5 your writes are a little bit slower but your reads are faster.
When configuring RAID 5 for a mailserver you need to reduce the stripe size
since your not doing large sequential reads. Also, enable write-back
caching. This will greatly increase your write performance but ONLY, ONLY,
ONLY do this if you have a battery backup on the cache.
