Okay, I'm totally stumped, I hope one of you can help out.
I'm running Imail 6.06 on NT 4.0 SP 6a with Outlook 2000 (SP2) in "Internet
Mail Only" mode on the desktop. We're using IMAP to read mail (no POP3) and
there is a firewall between the users and the mail server.
Some (but not all) of the users have a recurring problem where Outlook hangs
with the message "Fetching Headers" when they open it. The little mail
exchange icon animation keeps running, but nothing ever completes.
Sometimes I can kill the process and restart and everything works normally,
sometimes not. One fix is to delete the account settings and add them
again. This will cure the problem for a few days, then it's back. There does
not seem to be a correlation to mailbox size or message count.
This seems to be isolated to Outlook. Outlook Express doesn't hang this way.
Unfortunately Outlook Express doesn't always show all available messages and
we use Outlook for other things.
We also get messages that the "IMAP Server has closed the connection." These
are not incident with the fetching headers problem, but may have some
bearing.
Can anyone give me a clue where to look to fix this problem? My boss wants
to switch to Exchange, which will solve this problem, but I'm afraid replace
it with twenty others.
Thanks,
-cpc-
