I cannot say what the problem is, but OE and Outlook's defaults for timeout
are typically set to about the shortest time possible and it is a good idea
to up that to 1 minute or more.

If the errors seem to happen most often, when the network or mail server is
most busy, the above should help.

IMail does not close down connections that are established by the client
(until a much longer period of time passes!), until the client has completed
its transaction, so the error message you quote, is not really true, but
could be caused by the client timing out, before it has gotten all data for
that transaction. The above suggestion should help for this one!

It is also possible that your firewall is doing 'command filtering' which
would keep some commands from getting from the client to the server. If you
disable that, it might help.

Log files from both the server and client can be most helpful when
troubleshooting intermittent problems. In IMail, go to that service and
check/change the settings and then restart that service, to enable the
changes. Cannot help on setting this in the client, but in OE it is in the
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Troubleshooting section.
