Hi,
The problem was simple - there is a gaping hole in the documentation for
setting up the external database. That combined with my stupidity
(inexperience!) in not realizing the effect of making the text fields char
instead of varchar. That meant that the spaces were being added to the paths.
Two things helped me figure it out. Firstly there was an obscure reference
to a similar problem in the Knowledge base and secondly the logging
referred to the file that couldn't be created was enclosed with an opening
bracket and no closing bracket. That indicated to me the log was either
truncated (unusual!) or the file that was being created did include spaces
in the path.
Like most of the help offered in this list (and very much appreciated BTW),
the problem seemed to me to be related to permissions and much time was
wasted by me following those checks <sigh>.
