If Imail DNS queries were failing due to being eaten by the proxy, you 
should have seen traces of that in the Imail logs.

IMGate and your recursive/delegated DNS would be happiest as bastion hosts 
in the DMZ between your proxy and your border router.  Run a small, 
non-exclusive forwarding DNS inside the proxy.
