Hmmm..., I've seen NT and Bind work quite well, even over extended periods
of time (months without a restart). I don't think that is too bad.... Don't
mean to start a wild discussion on the subject of O/Ss, just offering
another point of view.
Depends on what one means when using terms like 'reliable'. Now if you has
said '99.9999%' uptime, then you might be right. All in ones perspective and
needs. If 99.99% is good enough, the number of solutions is probably even
greater. Sounds like Roger has neither the time nor the money to get the
'best' solution, so he is looking for a 'cheap' solution. His best bet is to
get closest to the best that he can afford. Give him viable options and let
him decide.
Yes, you can run a DNS server on your web server, but in my experience, that
may not be the best idea. If you have a not so new PC that you can use, I'd
suggest that be your starting point. Bind is probably the best overall DNS,
and yes, Todd is correct about the best OS to use for running it. DNS may
seem like a big task, but think of it as a basic requirement to being a
successful and knowledgeable Admin and tackle it. It really does not make
any difference to understanding DNS, which OS you use, so if you are more
comfortable with one, fine, use that. Once you make the leap, and spend a
few hours with the software and the Bind book, it is actually pretty simple
(although you are sure to have many questions, some can be answered here, or
join a DNS related list and ask there).
