Ping (and tracert) are incredibly useful diagnostic tools.  If you ban ICMP 
packets, and other servers are having trouble sending you mail, they may 
just see the dropped packets and assume your server is down.  If you accept 
ICMP packets, they would see that your server is up and spend more time 
investigating the problem, and likely alert you to a problem a lot sooner 
than you would find out about it otherwise.
