Do you know what mail application the the external "people" are
using? Some apps and older versions generate the outdated
Return-Receipt-To: (RRT) header, a directive which is not supported by
Imail, instead of (in newer apps it's usually in addition to) a Message
Disposition Notification (RFC 2298) request via a
Disposition-Notification-To: header. Only the MDN will provoke the "Do you
want to send a receipt?" popup. Though you should certainly have the
REFUSE NULL <> SENDERS off as everyone suggested for RFC compliance, this
only affects Delivery Service Notifications (DSNs), which are processed
automatically at the server. It has no affect on MDNs, which are processed
voluntarily at the client.
Outlook Express, for example, generates only MDN requests. Eudora 5
generates MDN requests, with the option to send the outdated RRT along with
it. Outlook 2000 can request MDNs (Options-Request a read receipt) or DSNs
(Options-Request a delivery receipt). In the incoming message, you should
be able to look at the headers and see what it's sending, if anything. My
guess is that, as you look more closely at a range of machines, you'll see
that either users have disabled MDN responses in their mail app, or the
sender is not sending an MDN request.
Re: forwarding MDN responses, this would only be a problem if you
deliberately filtered outgoing messages through some other gateway
product. Imail can't do this. MDN responses don't use a <> sender or
anything really special--they just look like they came from the original
recipient's e-mail address (though they are identified deeper down in the
headers with MIME type "Disposition report" and some other junk). So all
of the users are already on your local host.
