Hi,
The following story is not really off topic given some of the gripes
expressed lately..
38 days ago I downloaded PCAnywhere's v10.0 30 day trial version. Installed
it at home and at work and everything went as smooth as a baby's bottom.
Last Sunday the trial period ran out so of to their website and paid by
credit card.
Following instructions carefully, the installation of the program
successfully makes my computer unoperable. The computer freezes at the
ctl-alt-del prompt. It is impossible to do a safe boot or last known good.
Going to their web site, their KB acknowledges the problem may occur and
tells you how to fix it by installing another copy of the OS, loading the
registry, making the changes. Naturally, that made no difference at all.
I then go to m$ KB and even they have an article on the problem.
On Tuesday I ring Symantec Technical Support who first of all ask me for my
credit card details to pay for the call. I tell them that if I pay then I
go to the Dept. of Consumer Affairs. I immediately get free support.
The tech support guy then asks me what's wrong and assumes I'm a dill
(which is a fair thing to do as any tech support person knows). He then
starts to guide me thru the steps from the original KB article. After much
time wasting, he then tells me he'll ring back in an hour.
24 hours later I ring them and have to start all over again. Finally they
decide to "escalate the issue" and will get back to me Friday. Friday came
and went.
I then spent two more days trying to figure it all out myself. The
information I learnt about the registry, editing it etc etc was invaluable.
By now I am growing more and more confident. After taking a lengthy break i
decide that I need to think this thru rather than just trying things slapdash.
Penny drops. I change one value in the registry, the computer boots to last
known good and I'm up and away.
The moral of the story. There are of course several lessons to be learnt
but the one that springs to mind is, when a new version comes out go and do
something else that will take up all your time while some other dumb
bastard gets the bugs out of it. :-)
Thanks for bearing with me. It's amazing how sharing helps get rid of
frustrations :-)
Glen.
