I read the KB article and looked for the SMTP Auth option at the server. I cannot find where to change this setting using remote HMTL access menus; is it only available when directly at the server? (I am temporarily unable to use pcAnywhere to access my server because it is hung there; have to wait until tomorrow when someone at the ISP can reboot my server to clear it.)

BTW, I have changed to Relay For Address and have entered some IP addresses in the list, and that seems to work OK. As a minimum, I can struggle along with that. At the mail client level, I have no authentication features selected.

You put in all IP addresses that belong to you are that you know are trusted.

For those users who do not have fixed ips then that’s where SMTP Auth comes in.  They must use SMTP Auth.  I checked the KB quickly and found http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19980116-JB02.htm  which references Imail version 4.0+.  So I think your version does support smtp auth on the server.

But now your users must find the settings on their email clients and turn on this option.  Some of the older email clients did not have this ability but it has been available for at least a couple of years on most clients.

Hope this helps –

Terry

Thanks, Terry. But, how do I know what IP addresses to put in the Relay For list? Many users use dialup access, and the IP address would change each time.

That means your ip address is not in the relay for addresses list and you do not have SMTP Auth on for your client.  In the various Outlook versions this is normally turned on via a check box that has a label like “My outgoing (smtp) server requires authentication” or words to that effect.

OK, when I do that I get no error messages on checking mail, but when I try to send I get the message:

“… rejected by the server. Server Response: ‘550 not local host list.ipswitch.com, not a gateway’…”

What next?

I do not know about v4 but in 6 and 7 you would relay mail for but put no Ip addresses. then have your users set the SMTP authentication in their mail client.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Relay problems

I am running IMail server V4 on a WinNT computer. The computer is co-located at an ISP. This is a sideline business and I host several domains, mostly for non-profit organizations, including some with email servers. Spammers have found my server and are using it heavily. My users are not part of the local network where the server is running and are scattered around many states and are not part of any single network. I probably have fewer than 25 actual users, but they are spread among the domains. Some of the organizations have list servers, but most posters are not actual users in their domain.

From what I can see, IMail does not provide SMTP security for this situation. If I select No Relay, my users cannot send mail. I can select Relay Mail For but I do not know from what IP address any user will be sending mail because many use local dialup access and don’t have fixed IP addresses. If I select Relay Mail For Anyone I am open to spammers.

I have checked the documentation for IMail V7 and don’t really see anything that would solve my problem, but perhaps I am missing something. Perhaps one of you can help me.

1.       Will IMail provide the protection I need, and do I have to upgrade to V7 to do so? If so I will probably have to go out of business, since my operation is very small and I can’t afford the $995 upgrade price.

2.       Is there another email server software that will provide the capability I need?

3.       Is there a different approach I should use to accomplish what I need to do?

Many thanks for all who read this and consider my plight!
