Matt,

We just recently turned SMTP Auth on, "out of the blue" so to speak. We
used the "Relay for Addresses" option and it works great for our users in
our two /24 blocks, so far as to not necessitate any changes on their end.
POP3 mail receiving is not an issue. However, POP3 users who do not connect
via your /21 block will need to set up their email clients to log in to your
SMTP server. In Outlook Express this is done by checking the "My Server
Requires Authentication" box under the Outgoing Mail Server section of the
Servers tab of the email accounts property screen (is that enough of a
mouthful). The process is almost identical for Outlook 2000. I have not
set it up on any other mail client.

The only problem I have seen with this scenario is an isolated case where a
web/email hosting customer is dialing in via a foreign ISP and is behind a
3Com NAT firewall. In that instance, I had the users configure their
outgoing mail server to be the SMTP server of their dial-up ISP.

Hope this helps.

Ok, my company owns a /21 block of IP addys, lets say xxx.xxx.120-127.xxx.
I'd like all of these computers to be able to send e-mail off of my Imail
computer, and I assume the best way to do that is with relay for addresses.
I also would like anyone else that has a pop3 account with me to be able to
send mail off of my server (one COMPLETE set of instructions, where I can
tell my users to enter X (and Y) into the fields, rather than telling them
to contact their ISP...) and I assume I do that with SMTP Auth.
If I turn SMTP Auth on, will that make it difficult for people to be allowed
to send mail using relay for addresses? can they both co-exist in a nice
friendly fashion? I'm getting lots of pressure to turn smtp auth on, but I
don't want to turn it on if it breaks my other working connections...

thanks again!

Matt

relay for addresses

good idea. they should relay out through their access provider

no effect really, they just wont be able to send any mail. :))

yes, go here: http://www.mailops.com, Robert Fehns most excellent site,
