(Note: This is my second posting of this message. It seems some messages
don't get through to the list.)

This discussion is interesting, but not new or special to version 7. We had
a series of discussions here last winter and spring about "invisible mail",
and that appears to be the same problem you are discussing. The key factors
are:

* It appears to be primarily an IMAP problem, although a couple of people
claimed to have the problem with POP3 (but I could only confirm the problem
with IMAP).
* Typically, the messages are available via the web interfact, but not with
Outlook, Outlook Express, or similar mail client.
* Your mail client shows the wrong number of new messages (for example, it
says you have three new messages, but you only see one with Outlook
Express).

The second and third points are really part of the same thing: the mail
server reports to the client the number of new/unread messages, but the mail
client is unable to download all of them. Hence the term "invisible mail."

The cause for this is that IMail has trouble with certain headers, and then
Outlook refuses to download the messages with the bad headers. My tests
showed that IMail just managles some aspects of certain headers. Why this
occurs, or why it only happens to some installations, is a big mystery.
However, the problem is widespread and has existed in various forms going
back to version 4.x. I have never seen Ipswitch publicly comment on or
admit to the existence of this bug.

I had this problem with 4.07, and I currently have this problem with 6.06.
I haven't upgraded to 7.x yet, but I'm disappointed that some people are
still experiencing this problem. From time to time, I fantasize about
collecting a bunch of IMail users and filing a class-action law suit -- not
to make any money, just to force Ipswitch to take action. However, my
observation in this discussion list is that many people either don't worry
about it (they just stick to POP3 or Web access), or they somehow haven't
had to deal with the problem (or don't realize that they are having a
problem).
