I would have to agree with you about the value of blocking attachments in a
corporate setting. I block all executable files (.exe,.com, .bat,.vbs,
.scr.,.pif, etc) using TrendMicro's VirusWall and it has saved my butt many
times. I also scan all incoming viruses, but blocking attachments
eliminates the problem of a new virus sneaking by the virus definition
files. This hasn't caused any hardship for my users because, after all, the
vast majority of users don't receive legitimate email with vbs, pif or bat
attachments. People may not like it when they don't receive the cute
screensaver from their friend or the latest version of Elf Bowling but it is
hard for them to justify weakening our security for frivolous email so they
don't even bother to complain. My users rarely have a legitimate need to
receive an executable attachment, and I am able to work out alternative
arrangements (such as zipping) for those few instances when someone needs to
receive such an attachment.
I can understand the problem of an ISP blocking attachments but, in my
opinion, in a corporate setting it is a highly effective strategy for
keeping viruses out of your network.

That depends on the situation. We us Imail for our corporate e-mail and
want them to have to take that extra step. Anti-virus works great and
catches most of the problem files, but a couple of times my .vbs block
has caught brand new viruses before they were included in the dat file
updates. If I were running an ISP I would leave it up to the users, but
in a corporate enviroment different rules apply.
