I'm not ever using the list... I am just using the smtp... 

Can anyone recommend a good Windows SMTP server that I can feel
confident with what is going on? 

Or some way to know what the issue is here with imail.

check the list archives, there is way to have the Imail services
"interact 
with the desktop".

Imail�s list server is a lame duck, hasn't been improved for a long
time. 
It's very nice to be included in Imail for low-volume smallish lists,
but 
there have been many reports like yours here.
