I just joined the list but had to chime in here.

The primary reason for the drop in software prices was
because of the change in the market. More end users means
lower prices are needed. MS prices weren't always low.
I can still remember paying $400+ for DOS when I was a
student.

At the same time, the only one making money with MS
products is MS. I've been in the computer retail business
for 15 years and since Windows 95, we have been losing
money on most MS sales. I could go into the reasons why
here, but I'm sure many of you are familiar with the
legal battles against MS including price fixing.
