You are correct, I haven't "needed" the list, I've been running Imail for a
little over two years with very little problems (checking my shoes to see
what I stepped in). I think I've asked two questions here in the list in
that time, and neither question was a critical, and I've called Imail's
"tech support" once. BUT, this list gives a lot of great info from a lot of
very savvy people, so I stay subscribed and read all the mail.
I was NOT trying to start a flame on MS, or Linux, neither was I trying to
say one OS was better then another. Quite a few here run mixed networks
with both MS and Linux. I simply didn't feel this list was the appropriate
place for someone to bash an OS or try and convince "seasoned" admins that
they should dump what they are running to run something else. I felt (feel)
that this list was for Imail, not OS bashing.
As far as MS goes, I agree whole heartedly, a lot of their business tactics
are deplorable and their prices are inflated. BUT, if it wasn't for them
NONE of us would be where we are today. The Internet wouldn't be what it
is, our kid's schools wouldn't have Internet access, desktop PCs would still
be running using 286, 386, or 486 processors, and we would most likely be
having this "conversation" via PcRelay or FIDO on bulletin boards.
And I must agree with Sandy about the $$ and supporting MS OS's over the
years. Back when I was a field service engineer for DEC the overtime pay
from supporting MS helped keep food in my kid's mouths. And to be honest, a
lot of us wouldn't have the knowledge and troubleshooting skills we have if
it wasn't for those lovely MS features (bugs). Jeez, it sounds like I'm
promoting MS, and I'm not!
Anyway, once again, I was NOT trying to start a flame or cause a debate over
MS practices or which OS is better.
Regards,
Mike Achenbach
