Well, the answer may have been found. My clients are all running on IP-Less
Virtual Hosts,
and this article http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20000117-DM01.htm
clearly states:

Note, In versions before IMail 7.0 SMTP Authentication did not work for
shared-IP-address Virtual Hosts which use an external user database.
The Primary Domain must use the IMail user database for SMTP Authentication
to work for shared-IP-address Virtual Hosts.

If your Virtual Host does have its own IP address then SMTP Authentication
works for any user database.

This being the case, does anyone know how to switch the Primary Domain to
use the IMail database
instead of an external database? Is noone else using IP-Less Virtual
Hosts? I cannot believe I am the
first to have IMail setup this way esp. since there is a kb article about
it.
