ah, that's another problem. 40k files in the spool directory are not necessarily 40k msgs waiting to be sent. No OS can handle 40K items in one file system node efficiently. each SMTP process has to scan the directory table of 40K entries to find a msg to send. very very slow. use ispclean.exe on ipswtich imail tools page or somewhere to delete all files older than a date. this might fix your problem immediately, they you can go on holiday, too.
