As I said earlier, putting an IMgate somewhere on internet to clean your incoming mail will be a great savings. IMGate can be configured to max number of SMTP client (sending) processes to prevent, maybe, SMTP sends from hogging your outgoing bandwidth. this max number is a static number. When bandwidth if both limited and expensive, a bandwidth manager should help a lot. I recommend www.etinc.com for bw-mgr, on FreeBSD. For a given max of 512 kbits bandwith, you can assign say 64 kbits to SMTP, 128 kbits to http, 2% for ICMP (limits ICMP attacks), etc. and for up and down independently. Also, I strongly recommend that you have your resolving DNS forward all queries to a DNS on the Internet side of the sat link.
