That depends mostly on the volume of mail that you are scanning, and also
on a few other factors (such as what percentage is just plain text, which
doesn't need to be scanned, and how much is from IMail mailing lists, which
only needs to be scanned once, and your server).
As a general rule of thumb, you should be able to scan up to about 50,000
E-mails/day on a typical server (one 500MHz CPU) without a performance hit
(although you'll likely notice higher CPU usage in the Task Manager at that
volume). A faster CPU will allow proportionately more mail to be scanned.
Declude Virus Pro has a pre-scanning feature that will increase
performance, by preventing most HTML E-mail from needing to be
scanned. Many mail clients are set up by default to send both text and
HTML, even though the user may only enter text with no colors, underlining,
or other HTML features. This mail normally needs to be scanned, because it
could contain a virus such as Kak.worm. However, with the pre-scanning,
Declude will allow safe HTML to go through unscanned. Any HTML that could
potentially be dangerous (such as Javascript, Active-X, plug-ins, etc.)
will still be scanned.

Technically, yes. Any extra software running on the server will slow
things down. It's just a matter of whether or not it is noticeable.
If you're dealing with less than about 10,000 E-mails/day, you almost
certainly won't notice that Declude Virus is running. If you're dealing
with higher volumes, you'll may start to notice the extra CPU usage in the
task manager, but won't notice a performance hit until you're around 50,000
or higher (more with a faster CPU and pre-scanning). With a dual 1GHz CPU,
you could scan hundreds of thousands of E-mails per day.

Hopefully, one of our customers will comment on a real life scenario,
rather than just my more technical and theoretical answer.
