I've not heard of a sure-fire formula but here are some shots in the dark:

1. increase your swap size to 3 x RAM size

2. increase your memory size to 1 or 2 gb

3. put these items in dedicated partitions, preferably on separate disks:

* OS + programs

* system swap

* imail spool directory

* mailboxes

4. Put small limits on your max mailbox size and then max message size.

5. defragment the spool and mailbox partitions frequently.
In practice, defrag requires lots of free space per partition, keep your
partition free space to 30% or 40% of partition size.

or add an empty disk and defrag by backing up a used partition to the empty
disk, reformat the used partition, copy the backup disk back to the
freshened partition, reformat the back up disk.

6. Reduce the SMTP+SMPTD process load and DNS load on Imail by adding
IMGate as outbound gateway/MX host.
