Double checked my logfiles - I only find the primary mailserver:
02:27 05:33 SMTP-(000001B4) Trying email.dk (0)
02:27 05:33 SMTP-(000001B4) Connect email.dk [212.242.40.84:25] (1)

I repeats every half hour until it gives up, so it doesn't try the secondary
at all.

Yes, it does.

This means that IMail should try 212.242.40.84, and if that fails, it 
should try *one* of the other three 212.242.40.x's.

That's a bad conclusion.

The IMail SMTP logs will show you exactly what happened.  For 
example, it 
is quite likely that the backup mailserver responded with a temporary 
error.  Or perhaps the backup mailserver was down, too, or unreachable.
