I'll try telneting to the SMTP port in the morning when it goes down. I think I tried that once and it would respond ok. No problems at all with POP3. Sometimes the server does get loaded down with the webmessaging but a restart usually fixes that. SMTP stays down even when there is plenty of cpu and memory and disk. Very strange indead. What happens when you telnet to the SMTP port, do you get the IMail banner? How about the POP port? Are there delays? If so you might have to increase your timeout in the mail client. since it is peculiar to 8:00AM I would tend to think that the server is getting very busy for a while as the morning rush starts.
